Sketchbook Flipthrough: Dec 19 - Jun 20

July 27, 2020 Corinne Furniss
sketchbook flipthrough.jpg

One of the creative practices I have developed is to work in my sketchbook for one hour every day. It seems that the key to my personal creativity is consistency rather than quality. I have gone through so many sketchbooks in my developing career as an artist but this is the very first one that I have fully completed. I worked in this Seawhite of Brighton A5 sketchbook from December 2019 to June 2020.

Tattoo Art: Living Galleries Through History

July 13, 2020 Corinne Furniss
the art of tattoos.jpg

Tattoos have existed for millennia. Currently, the oldest known tattoos are from the Alps mountains on Ötzi which date from 3250BC and the oldest known decorative tattoos are from Egypt dating to 3351 - 3017BCE. They existed as a form of magic or medicine or branding for slaves and criminals, before becoming a form of identity, expression and artwork. Since around the 1800's, though, tattoos have been increasing in sophistication, design, artform and popularity.

The Art of the Human Figure

May 18, 2020 Corinne Furniss
The Human Figure.png

The human figure has been a significant focus and subject in art for centuries. From the very earliest cave drawings and statues that have been discovered to the most recent developments in modern art and technology, the human figure has played a key role. I think from a very straightforward point of view, this is because we like to create art we can relate to, and what is more relatable than us?

An Introduction to Flow State

August 22, 2019 Corinne Furniss
Flow State.jpg

Csíkszentmihályi describes the mental state of flow as "being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you're using your skills to the utmost."

Art Therapy_ (2).jpg

It has long been known that the act of creating can be very therapeutic. For centuries people have used art as a means of creativity, expression, identity and reflection. Art has been shown to help people of all ages and many different illnesses, alleviating symptoms from depression to dementia. Art as a form of therapy was first developed in the 20th century and has gained in popularity in recent years.

Story Telling: The History, The Art, The Ego

April 25, 2019 Corinne Furniss
storytelling.jpg

If there was one thing I had to choose that sets humans apart from other life forms, it would be our ability to tell stories. From fairy tales, to politics, story telling is the single most astonishing thing that humanity has created. Stories are in self-talk, stories are in religion, stories are in culture and stories are in nationality. Stories are what makes humanity. Story telling is both the narrative we tell ourselves and others, and the imaginative creations we like to share. All of human life is born of our ability to tell stories.

The Art of Slow Living

March 21, 2019 Corinne Furniss
Slow Living.jpg

Humans have made life far more stressful than it needs to be. Stop and observe nature - it doesn't rush from one task to the next, it simply is. The trees grow, the birds sing, the sun shines, life simply wants to be. This could be your inspiration for how to live your life.

I practiced experimenting with composition and blocks of tone more this month. I definitely need more practice with using full blocks of colour but I really enjoyed how some of these pieces turned out.

The Art of Living Plant-based

It's kind of strange to think that I've been vegan for a year now. I definitely never thought that I would ever go plant-based, but I love it and wouldn't live any other way now.

January Drawings

February 14, 2019 Corinne Furniss
January.jpg

At the end of last year I decided to set myself a challenge: I would draw something everyday. I wanted to push myself to create something everyday, even just something small, and I wanted to challenge my boundaries and composition and skill. And so, on the first of January I got out a brand new sketchbook and sat down with a cup of tea to complete my first drawing of 2019.

New Year; Same Me

January 3, 2019 Corinne Furniss
new year same me final.jpg

I’d like to write today about the year that I’ve had in 2018. I’m sure many of us can recognise 2018 as a period of growth and learning; for me, 2018 was a year of unbelievable acceptance, kindness and personal development. It was the year I found peace, it was a year of self-love. It was the year that I started Ccorinnef! And what a crazy year it has been.

My Creative Process

October 4, 2018 Corinne Furniss
creativity-process.jpg

Today’s post is going to be a little walk-through of my process of creating my artwork. I’ve split it into three categories, one for each medium I use, for the sake of ease on my part, and because my process does change slightly depending on the medium I’m using.
